Aluminations Project: Initial Setup

The installation has now been set up but the assessment has been postponed until next week. This is beneficial as it will give me some time to see what happens when the piece is left to the public.

I have attached a number of different style locks, along with the keys, to the lockers. The lockers that already had a lock on them have had a aluminium foil key attached to them using tape.

I want to leave the work for a week to see what happens to it in this time. I assume that many of the locks would have been torn off to allow for people to access the lockers.

Aluminations Project: Spaces

Spaces that I find interesting in the building:

I like the space of the elevator as I think it is an important space in terms of the way that it can be used to travel but only only to a certain reach. It is as if the space gives omits a sense of potential movement and travel but actually presents a very limited path.

I do like this alcove of the window as it changes quite a lot during the course of the day in terms of light. I also like the fact that the space can be seen from outside of the building. This is important as the installation is only allowed to be positioned on the 4th floor of the Dorrit Black building. The window would work to extend the piece out of the space and essentially into the outside realm.

The one thing that I do really like about the lift is the lighting on the ceiling. It feels very industrial and clinical. The cool feeling of the space works with the cool feel of aluminium foil. I think it would be interesting to perhaps create an installation that has a warm feeling. It would create a juxtaposition that would be quite interesting.

I love the versatility of the space. It has a lot of potential in terms of hanging space. I could perhaps explore this space with the installation idea of the hanging hats or umbrellas.

I really think that I will go with this space. I find that this space feels so desolate and forgotten. It is as if the function of the space is to allow for storage but based on the lack of locks on the lockers, it is not even being used for that purpose.

I like the idea of creating an installation that is not overly obvious or overpowering; that the viewer could potentially walk straight past it without even noticing its presence. I like this idea as it reminds me of the general uses of aluminium foil; it is a temporary product, generally used and then discarded almost immediately. It is modest in its abilities and function.

It will be interesting to see how intrusive this simple work can be on the people who move within the space.

Aluminations Project: Artists exploring aluminium foil

Aluminations Project

Artists who use aluminium foil in sculpture and installation:

This work is really interesting in both subject and materiality. The artist has used the aluminium foil to create the shells of the bodies, huddled in prayer. The foil, generally a throw away material, causes me to explore the themes of the vulnerability of the human condition, spirituality and religion, and the temporality of the physical world.
The shimmering surface of the aluminium foil brings a sense of seduction to the veiled figures.

I feel as though the repetition of the figures is what makes this work powerful and interesting. A uniformity is brought about the the aluminium foil but the figures are all different in form.

These works are really interesting in the way that they have been installed in several different locations. I like the way that the setting plays a role in the feel of the piece. I am drawn to the way that the artist has worked the material to create a piece that feels almost natural in its form but, at the same time, very alien in its aesthetic appearance. It feels as though, in the bottom work, the artist is demonstrating a sense of emptiness.

Rhonda Weppler and Trevor Mahovsky
What leaf, what mushroom?
2014
Brass foil, aluminium foil, glue
Dimensions variable

These works are so interesting in the way that the artists have create forms that are familiar to the viewer. I like the way that the shapes are either holding true to their forms or seem to have lost their essence by collapsing in on themselves.

Music of Chance 4
2010-2011
Hollow cast made of a single unbroken sheet of aluminium foil
Approximately 30 feet long

http://wepplermahovsky.com/img/MusicofChance4.jpg

This work has been created out of a single sheet of aluminium foil. I like the way that the objects are removed from the sheet and make up a vast number of individual items but come from a continuous sheet. It brings a uniformity to the work.

1989 Ford Escort 2 and 1989 Ford Escort 3
2004
Aluminium foil and glue
Approximately 54 x 180 x 60

I was thinking about creating something similar to this work and am glad that I found the piece because it has given me a sense of how the forms would sit with their weight. I like the idea that the work speaks about safety and protection, and consumerism and production.

Rudolf Bone
Tainita
1984-2011
Aluminium foil
Human size

This work is interesting because the aluminium foil has been compacted, rather than presented in its fragile state. The materiality of the piece hints toward ideas about consciousness and a state of being.

Skin of Quetzalcoatl
2010
Aluminium foil sheet
300 x 190 cm

I like the way that the work has a simplicity about it whilst also giving off the feeling that the artist has put a lot of effort into getting it to look the way that it does.

Tom Friedman
Circle Dance
2009
Aluminium foil
5.5 x 23 x 23 inches

This work reminds me so much of Matisse's painting, The Dance.
I love the way that the figures seem to have been brought to life. The aluminium foil is suited to this sort of artwork as it is able to be formed easily into shapes. I also like the way that the figures are slightly shiny, it adds another dimension to it.

This work is really interesting because it demonstrates the different ways that the material manipulated to portray different objects and shapes. It has been changed to adhere to a number of different surfaces and textures. It is important to note that highly detailed objects can be made using the material.
